If you’re ever in Colorado and want to go on a hike, I would recommend going to Hanging Lake.
Most people have heard of the beautiful mountains in Colorado, and if you ever travel to Colorado, you will not be disappointed. But if you arrive at the airport, you will be met with anything but mountains! It’s as flat as it gets because it’s high desert. It can be a little of a shock to many as they might have expected lots of mountains as soon as they arrive at the airport. But the closer you get to Denver you’ll quickly see the mountain range in the west.
It takes about 20 minutes to get to Denver from the airport, and about 30-45 minutes to drive from Denver to the foothills. Winter time is especially beautiful when you can see the snow on top of the mountains.
Hanging Lake, Colorado
Hiking up to Hanging Lake makes for an excellent day trip. The drive from Denver is quite enjoyable as you go west on I-70 toward the mountains. My friend thought it took about an hour to drive there from Denver, but a little over 2 hours later we finally got there! 🙂 We drove past Breckenridge, and Vail which are some popular ski resorts.
From the parking lot, it’s only about a 30-minute hike up the mountain to get to Hanging Lake. There are longer hikes if you want to go even further, but the shortest route up to the lake is about 30 minutes. This is where the actual lake and waterfall is located.
A Hanging Lake and Waterfall
When you arrive at Hanging Lake, it’s a gorgeous view. It looks like you’re in a tropical and exotic place because of the color of water and waterfall. The water is super clear with a beautiful blue/greenish color and makes you want to jump in and go for a swim!
I had not seen pictures of the lake before I arrived. I was therefore amazed to see how beautiful it was. I found it very fascinating to find a waterfall and lake on top of a mountain! The name “Hanging Lake” suits it well.
You can go under the waterfall to take pictures as you can see in this picture:
You can also climb up to the top of the mountain, and you’ll get a fantastic view of the area. You’ll be able to see the waterfall from there as well.
Have you been there?
